Boscodon Abbey : with a thousand-year history, remarkable architecture, an exceptional forest and a museum for all
This breath-taking abbey, in its rocky and luscious setting, almost looks like a moored nave.
With a whispered invitation, the tour immerses the visitor in the medieval mentality.
A spiritual universe between the visible, the veiled and the invisible?
Between architectural and musical aesthetics?
A quest for meaning between faith and reason?
The threshold, an invitation to step inside
The guide pauses in front of the door. This signifies the passage between the secular and the sacred, before continuing to walk slowly towards the sanctuary.
The visitor’s gaze follows the bare walls before coming to a stop on the cross-less Christ of the radiating chapel, revealing even more of the building’s stark nature.
The immensity of the space, the silence and the depth
Visitors seem to ask themselves: is that the whisper of breathing stone I hear? Do they allow themselves to be inhabited by the silence or carried by the echoing of the monks’ songs?
Within this enveloping space, the light is revealed, prolonged by the shadow: against any duality, unity and harmony appear omnipresent.
Starkness and nudity
Nothing … no stained glass, no sculptures, no frescoes. Without representative images, the guide opens a few doors onto intermingling universes: geometric shapes, numbers, Romanesque architecture and Cistercian art. He suggests a symbolism in which the listener and viewer are freed from their representations.
