SAILING TOUR 2019

From a cruising race to a major sailing event...

The Tour Voile has come a long way since its beginnings in 1978. In fact, fromits beginnings as a cruising race, to an offshore school for numerous amateur crews and talented young sailors, over the years it has become a major sailing competition, with the participation of top-level champions such as Michel Desjoyeaux, Jean-Pierre Dick, François Gabart, Franck Cammas, Vincent Riou, Bernard Stamm and Damien Seguin, to name but a few.

But the DNA of the Tour Voile lies in the fact that it's the only event that brings together all the different sailing families, enabling enlightened amateurs to compete against the biggest names in sailing.

A better understanding of Tour Voile!

We are going to give you all the keys you need to better understand the Tour Voile and, above all, to want to take part in this unforgettable and magical spectacle that you can admire on the shores of our great lake of Serre-Ponçon at Savines-le-Lac:

A particularly intense sailing competition, where rigor, commitment and consistency are the keys to success.

  • A 23-day marathon with 9 stages of relentless confrontation in a frenetic pace: from 02 to 24/07/2021. The stage that will allow us to discover this not-to-be-missed event on Serre-Ponçon will be the ninth, the final, on July 23, 23 and 24, 2021 at Savines-le-Lac.
  • 2 types of event: Coastal Raids: long-distance courses, raced as close to the coast as possible, combining speed and strategy. Stades Nautiques: a series of short, close-contact regattas, just a few meters from land, to put the teams and their sailing techniques to the test.
  • Every day of the race counts, and teams with 3 or 4 crew members will have no room for error. Every day is a new challenge.

  • One of the essential rules is that all crews sail the same type of boat (one-design) so that victory is decided solely on the quality of the crew. Since 2015, the official boat of the Tour Voile is the Diam 24OD, developed in Port la Forêt by the elite of French sailing, it was voted "Boat of the year 2017", all categories and Multihulls, in the USA. It's the ideal boat for experiencing the pleasures of fast sailing, easy maneuvers and total safety.
    Little info +
  • The Tour Voile ranking is broken down into 4 types: the general ranking: addition of the points from each race, the youth ranking: only Teams made up entirely of crew members up to 23 years of age are eligible with their points in the general ranking, the amateur ranking: only Teams made up entirely of amateurs and with at least one member over 26 years of age are eligible with their points in the general ranking. And since 2019, the mixed classification has made its appearance to encourage gender diversity on the Tour, with the obligation for Teams to embark on each race at least one female crew member. New for 2021: the Rookie ranking: intended for new participants, with one member per day who has already sailed on the Tour Voile since 2015.

The Serre-Ponçon final, an unprecedented race format

The Tour Voile transcends specialities by mixing coastal raids and nautical stages. It is therefore by definition very difficult to master all the different aspects perfectly. The Tour therefore gives pride of place to the most complete sailors. This fast-paced marathon, where no mistakes are allowed, will conclude with anew race format for the final on July 24.
Match-racing on the Savines-le-Lac nautical stadium will determine the winner of the 2021 edition from among the top four finish ers. Meanwhile, the remaining crews will compete in a 22 nautical mile charity raid to benefit their partner associations.

'' A Stade Nautique is very short, you have to react very quickly all the time, you have less time to think... What I like about this regatta is that it's going to last a very short time, with contact, even to the nearest metre.
Robin Follin - Cheminées Poujoulat Tour de Voile 2019

Lac de Serre-Ponçon thermal baths, a sure bet

The mountains encircling the lake and the thermal amplitudes between day and night, which kick in during the summer months, mean that thermal breezes appear almost daily. A steady west/south-west wind reaching 20-25 knots in June and July, and constant water temperatures of 20 degrees, make this a unique place for board sports! This exceptional microclimate makes Lac de Serre-Ponçon the spot for windsurfers, kiters and all other sailing sports.

'' "Serre-Ponçon is an exceptional site for sailing! Thermal wind conditions during the summer season ensure excellent sailing conditions. The Tour Voile organizers are under the spell of the area, and are already imagining the final "Match Race" with the mountains in the background. So it won't just be freshwater sailors on the lake this summer. The ocean sailors will finish their race in the middle of the mountains, discovering the effects of the site and the Haut-Alpin thermals.
